Surly Hedgehog Photography was inspired by this adorable hedgehog named Kaiya; she was a part of my life for nearly 6 years. Kaiya was sweet and ticklish and playful, so her "Little Miss Attitude" pose came as a bit of a surprise.
I have been taking pictures since I first picked up my mother's 110 film camera as a child and officially became hooked while taking a darkroom photography class in high school. I continue to enjoy film photography, despite the fast and furious developments of the digital age. After all that time, I still feel the same excitement when my negatives and prints come out just right, and I still spew the same obscenities when I realize I left the lens cap on.
Everyone's lives are getting busier and more complicated these days, and it can be hard to slow down long enough to notice the small, simple things. These are the things I try to capture in my photography because as you know, sometimes the small things can make the difference between a bad day and a happy day.
A few notes about my photography style: I prefer the simple over the abstract, black & white over color, and film over digital, but you'll see both on this site. You will see images of things that may seem fairly common, or some that are downright strange. At the end of the day, if any or all of my images have made you smile or at least feel a bit less surly, I feel I have done my job as a photographer.
